MAGNA CARTA SAVED FOR AMERICA - THE MOST IMPORTANT DOCUMENT EVER OFFERED AT AUCTION SELLS FOR $21.3 MILLION TO AMERICAN, DAVID RUBENSTEIN NEW OWNER INTENDS TO EXHIBIT THE MANUSCRIPT AT THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES IN WASHINGTON New York, NY – December 18, 2007 – Tonight at Sotheby’s, in an overflowing salesroom, The Magna Carta was saved for America by David Rubenstein, who intends to place the document back on view at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. Mr. Rubenstein, who referred to the manuscript as a “beacon for freedom,” purchased the document this evening for $21,321,000. |
|
David Redden, a Vice Chairman of Sotheby’s and tonight’s auctioneer, said, “The most extraordinary document in the world was placed up for auction and the most perfect outcome was achieved.” Magna Carta is the royal document revered as the birth certificate of freedom. The iconic manuscript, dated 1297, is the original charter that enshrined the rights of man into English law, and inspired the passion for liberty that flowered in America in the 18th century and continues around the world today. It is the most famous single document in existence. Issued by King Edward I, and sealed by the king, this astonishing survivor was offered for sale by the Perot Foundation who purchased it from an English family in 1983. This medieval vellum manuscript is well-known to millions, having been on view with the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. since arriving in America more than 22 years ago. |
The David Feldman auction of the "Atlantic" collection of Classic Switzerland, presented over 270 lots in a deluxe, bi-lingual (German/English) catalogue. Of these, 97% were sold, for a total of 168% of the printed estimates.
Bidders from throughout Switzerland as well as from several foreign countries were present both in the auction room or via the internet, with most lots starting at modest levels and then soaring higher, sometimes to amazing levels.
The Cantonal Issues which made up a the main part of the catalogue saw many outstanding realisations. For example, the Zurich 6rp mint strip of ten, ex Hind, estimated for CHF 10'000, sold for CHF 31'070 (all results include buyer's premium). The right and left halves of a "Double Geneva" used on a matched pair of covers, estimated at CHF 20'000, brought CHF 47'800, while a pair of the Geneva "Large Eagles" on cover soared to CHF 64'530 against an estimate of CHF 15'000.
From the Winterthur issue, a strip of three of the 2 1/2rp used on cover, estimated at CHF 60'000, realised CHF 83'650. A mixed franking of the Winterthur with a 2 1/2rp Orts-Post, brought CHF 155'350 and another mixed franking, with the Rayon I 5r value, climbed to an astonishing CHF 191'200.
We at David Feldman are already making plans for our 2008 auction of Switzerland. We are also finalising preparations for our Spring series of auctions, planned for April 1-5, 2008, with rare stamps, covers and collections from all over the world, plus our semi-annual auction of Rarities of the World, which will again feature great single rarities and important collections offered intact.

Wednesday, December 5, 2007 – Tonight at Sotheby’s in London, Joseph Mallord William Turner’s (1775-1851) watercolour, Bamborough Castle, sold for £2,932,500, against a pre-sale estimate of £1.5-2.5 million* to a US private collector who was bidding on the phone. Four telephone bidders competed for the iconic work, driving the price comfortably in excess of its pre-sale high estimate. Tonight’s result ranks Bamborough Castle among the most important of Turner’s works ever sold at auction. |
The sale features over 12000 lots including around 4300 single lots Europe, overseas and thematic philatelie, 3000 single lots Germany, far over 3900 collections, lots and estates as well as a special section "Fournier" including more than 1100 artist stamp designs, proofs etc. mostly unique prints.
EVENING SALE OF CONTEMPORARY ART IN
NEW YORK BRINGS $315,907,000,
ABOVE THE HIGH ESTIMATE
FRANCIS BACON’S SECOND VERSION OF STUDY FOR BULLFIGHT NO. 1, 1969, COMMANDS $45.9 MILLION
The cover lot of the sale, Jeff Koons’ spectacular Hanging Heart (Magenta and Gold), 1994-2006, one of the most important works by Koons ever offered at auction, sold to Gagosian Gallery to applause for $23,561,000, a record for the living artist at auction and also for the artist (lot 14, est. $15/20 million). previous record was for Damien Hirst’s pill cabinet, Lullaby Spring, which sold for $19.2 million at Sotheby’s London in June. The price almost reached the record for a Contemporary sculpture, currently held by David Smith’s Cubi XXVIII, which sold for $23.8 million at Sotheby’s New York in November 2005. |
The brilliant magenta heart and gold undulating bow, which took ten years from conception to completion, is one of five uniquely colored versions of this dazzling work from Koons’ famed Celebration series. The perfect surface is coated in more than ten layers of paint. Executed in high chromium stainless steel, Hanging Heart weighs over 3,500 pounds, is almost nine feet tall and took over 6,000 man hours to produce. The sale also featured two works by Jean-Michel Basquiat, including his large-scale canvas, Untitled (Electric Chair) from 1981-82, watershed years for the artist, which sold for $11,801,000 (lot 16, est. $8/10 million). Untitled (Electric Chair), offered by a Foundation, was selected and purchased prior to completion from Basquiat’s first dealer Annina Nosei Gallery, New York. The work went into the collection of a Foundation, where it has remained ever since; this is the first time the work appeared on the market since it was painted in the artist’s studio in the basement of the Nosei Gallery. Also offered by the same Foundation were works by post-war sculptors, including Donald Judd’s Untitled, 1977, which brought $7,433,000 (lot 26, est. $6/8 million) and John Chamberlain’s Big E, 1962, which achieved $4,633,000 (lot 11, est. $2/3 million), both records from the artist at auction. Another Untitled work by Basquiat from 1981, which depicted one of the most engaging and combative warrior-figure paintings of the artist’s early years, sold for $7,769,000 (lot 48, est. $7/9 million). Highlighting the 15 works included in the evening sale from a Distinguished Private Collection, which brought $33.4 million (est. $29.9/40.8 million), was Andy Warhol’s Self Portrait (Green Camouflage), 1986, from his last series of self-portraits, which sold for $12,361,000 (lot 47, est. $9/12 million). Other works featured from this offering include Ellsworth Kelly’s Spectrum VI, 1969, formerly from the collection of the curator of 20th century at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, Henry Geldzahler, and related to Spectrum V, currently in the Collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, which sold for $5,193,000, a record for the artist at auction (lot 23, est. $4.5/6 million). Alexander Calder’s Untitled, 1935, a rare early wood and wire sculpture, similar to those in the Collections of the Tate Modern and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, sold for $4,409,000 (lot 34, est. $2.5/3.5 million).
Other works by Andy Warhol which brought strong prices included his Campbell’s Soup Can (Pepper Pot), 1962, which sold for $8,441,000 (lot 41, est. $7/9 million). This classic pop painting combines
4
Warhol’s keen graphic sensibility with his use of an appropriated image in the manner of Jasper Johns’ flag and target paintings. This work was formerly in the collection of Emily and Burton Tremaine, who had one of the foremost collections of avant-garde and contemporary art on the East coast from the 1950s through early 1980s. Also by Warhol from his Death and Disaster series was Four Jackies, 1964, which achieved $5,641,000 (lot 13, est. $4/6 million), and Suicide, 1964, which brought $5,193,000 (lot 12, est. $3.5/4.5 million).
Works by Chinese Contemporary artists brought strong prices, including Zhang Xiaogang’s Family Portrait, 1994, which sold for $4,969,000 (lot 68, est. $2.5/3.5 million) and Fang Lijun’s Series 2, No. 6, 1991-92, which brought $4,073,000 (lot 65, est. $800,000/1.2 million). |
Christian Arbeiter's second auction sale offers a large selection of interesting material from Germany, Europe and overseas. Well worth to mention is a large selection of lots from a specialized cover collection Germany French occupation zone. Highlight of the auction is the large selection of lots and collections including everything from untouched collections up to dealer stocks. Not to be missed is a fantastic Sweden cover collection.
AUCTIONS RECORDS ESTABLISHED FOR FRANZ MARC, JEAN-BAPTISTE-CAMILLE COROT, A SCULPTURE BY PABLO PICASSO, A WORK ON PAPER BY EGON SCHIELE
AND A PAINTING BY MAX ERNST
|
German Expressionist works were also among the top prices achieved this evening. Der Wasserfall (Frauen Unter Einem Wasserfall), a masterpiece by Franz Marc from 1912, sold to a bidder on the telephone for $20,201,000, a record for the artist at auction, and Lyonel Feininger’s Der Grüne Brucke (The Green Bridge) brought $10,121,000.

TUESDAY, JUNE 19, 2007 -- Claude Monet’s Nymphéas of 1904, a ground-breaking work and one of the finest of Monet’s famous waterlily series ever to have come to the market, tonight realised £18,500,000 ($36,724,350) at Sotheby’s in London. No fewer than eight determined bidders drove the price from £8 million up to the final figure, when the hammer fell to a private Asian collector bidding over the telephone. This was the second highest price ever achieved for a work by the artist at auction. (The previous record of £19.8 ($33 million) was achieved for Bassin aux Nymphéas of 1900 at Sotheby’s London in 1998). The Monet was the top lot in a sale which realised £80,395,200 ($159,592,512) – the third highest total for a sale of Impressionist and Modern Art at Sotheby’s London. The sale also set a benchmark in terms of the average lot price realised in any single session: the average lot price of £2.17 million is unprecedented in any auction ever held in London.

of coin and stamp shops across the US. We initially researched and populated
these maps ourselves, with the idea in mind that the public would subsequently
add to, and enhance, the information we provided. We mapped each coin or stamp,
and provided space for a written description, photo, and link to a website.
Since this project was launched, coin and stamp enthusiasts have made hundreds
of additions and enhancements to our maps. If you were one of these contributers,
we'd like to thank you for your help!
If you know of any rock coin or stamp shops in your local community that are new
or have closed in the last six months, I am writing to ask that you make those
changes to the maps. Also, please feel free to add any shops or clubs that are
still missing.
The link to the Coin Shops Map is as follows:
http://find.mapmuse.com/re1/interest.php?brandID=COIN_DEALERS
The link for the Stamp Shops Map is:
http://find.mapmuse.com/re1/interest.php?brandID=STAMP_DEALERS
If you have a coin or stamp related blog or website, a link or a mention would
be greatly appreciated. It is through links, and improving search results that
we are able to provide this service to consumers and businesses free of charge.
Thanks, Cindy Jett
The United States were ruled by 43 presidents since 1789. The first US stamp 1847 pictured Benjamin Franklin. The second stamp of this first US stamp set pictured George Washington. Since this time a lot of US stamps with presidents were issued. So it's time to present a list of all US presidents who are pictured on stamps of the United States. |

On 30 March, the Post starts selling a special set holding an
Åland commemorative €5 coin. It is issued in commemoration of the 150th
anniversary of the Åland demilitarization celebrated in 2006. The commemorative coin ‘Demilitarization 150 Years’ is coined by Mint of Finland in co-operation with the Landskapsregering, the Government of Åland. The motif of this beautiful commemorative coin made from so-called ‘Nordic Gold’ (copper) is a stunted pine and a dove of peace steering a rustic postal boat. The artist is Pertti Mäkinen. |
The Åland Post puts one or two sets of Finish euro coins on the market each year. Apart from the coins, the set also contains an Åland stamp. The price for this year’s set is € 25.00. |
The first picture postcards were published about 120 - 130 years
ago. Soon the first art postcard were issued. Since the transition from art fo "kitsch"
is flowing soon the first postcards with kitsch motives appeared. Especially
during the time shortly before World War I the most kitsch cards were printed. They are not only historically interesting, since they reflect the spirit of their time and their poeple, but also they are often showing nice and interesting motives. |

Dear Madam/Sir, In a sophisticated
burglary, the items described below were stolen from the manor house and museum
Saebygaard (Saeby, Denmark: http://www.saeby-museum.dk/Saebygard.htm) between 10
and 13 July 2004. Immediately after the theft, the local police informed
Interpol, but unfortunately the search has yielded no results. In the early
1990s, the Arenfeldt family donated Saebygaard and its furniture, paintings,
library and archive to a foundation to ensure its preservation for future
generations. Since 1682 Saebygaard remained in the same family and this degree
of continuity means that a unique and uniquely documented collection of
furniture and objects has developed there. As it will appear from the
description below, one of the stolen objects – a large wall mirror from the late
1600s, is thus known from the inventories compiled upon the death of Holger
Pachs in 1698 and had been at Saebygaard for more then three centuries when it
was stolen in July.
As a representative of the Arenfeldt-family, I would be most grateful if you
would circulate the information about the objects to your business contacts and
colleagues.
Photographs of the stolen objects can be seen on

Description of the stolen objects:
1. Wall mirror, second half of the 1600s. Large central mirror (93.5 x 69 cm)
framed by eight smaller rectangular mirrors and crowned by a symmetrical
entablature with elaborate decoration. The “frame” and “crown” of the mirror
have rich decoration of gilded lead ornaments. All mirror glasses are faceted
and original. Overall size: height: 167 cm / width 91 cm; mirror size 93.5 x 69
cm. The mirror is listed in a 1698 inventory of the furniture at Saebygaard. It
is registered as object no. 88 : 8 x 186 in the currently used inventory of the
museum. Although this number should appear on the object, it is likely that is
has been removed after the theft.
2. Large brass tray (described as silver tray on the webpage of the police but
is made of brass), second half of the 1800s. Scallop shaped edges, engravings of
leaves, humans figures dressed in Renaissance clothing and exotic figures.
Diameter 59 cm, height 3 cm. Likely to have been an insert for a table.
Registered as object no. 88 : 8 x 188.
3. Four porcelain figurines: (I) Standing female figurine in short-sleeved
corseted dress and with a hat; white glazed porcelain with red and green
coloring; height 22 cm, diameter of base 7,5 cm. Mark appears to be an imitation
of the Meissen crossed swords – above the mark is an “E”. Registered as object
no. 88 : 8 x 206. (II) Standing male figurine, dressed and with “soft” hat (male
counterpart of (I)); white glazed porcelain with purple, yellow, red and green
coloring; height 23 cm, diameter of base 7,5 cm. Mark appears to be an imitation
of the Meissen crossed swords – above the mark is an “E”. Registered as object
no. 88 : 8 x 207. This object has slight damage. (III) Standing female figurine;
white glazed porcelain with red and green coloring; height 13 cm, diameter of
base 5 cm. Marked with an “S” that is framed by two intertwined lines which form
an ellipse. Possibly French 19th century. Registered as object no. 88 : 8 x 208.
(IV) Standing male figurine with a bird; white glazed with purple and green
coloring; height 12 cm, diameter of base 5 cm. No mark. Registered as object no.
88 : 8 x 209.
Please see the photographs of all six objects on:
