Jens Hermann´s collection of
ancient Greek and Roman coins will be sold on auction in Museumsbygningens
Kunstauktioner, Denmark, the 10th of November at 1pm. Catalogue and bidding

The auction is in two parts; Jens Hermann´s collection contains mostly ancient
coins, Greek (no. 1-262), Roman (no. 263-376), and some Danish and world coins
and medals (no. 377-505). Second part is from various claimants
containing ancient coins and some decorations and medals (no. 506-573).
Jens Hermann´s collection of ancient coins is the finest sold in Denmark for
many years. Most of the coins are in beautiful condition and with nice toning.
The coins are bought on auctions in Denmark (many Greek coins are from Paul M.
Proschowskys collection sold in 1970) and from coin dealers and auctions all
over Europe. Jens Hermann was very fond of Greek coins from Italy and Sicily,
also the coins from the kingdoms of Macedonia, Syria and Egypt had his special
interest. Tares in Calabria is represented with 20 pieces of the horseman
didrachm – all with different varieties. The early Italian incuse silver staters
from Metapont with an ear of barley, from Caulonia with the naked Apollo and
from Croton with a tripod, are represented with the coins (no. 33, 50 and 519.
From Syracuse on Sicily comes the beautiful decadrachm with the galloping
quadriga and the head of Arethusa surmounted by four dolphins. The coin is
signed by Euainetos below lower dolphin – on this coin the signature is off flan
(no. 83). The greatest ancient gold coin on this auction comes from Egypt, it is
an octodrachm from Ptolemaios II with the conjoined busts of the king and his
queen Arsinoë and the kings parents on the reverse (no. 240).
The gold aureus from the roman emperor Nero shows his portrait and Roma standing
inscribing a shield (no. 312). The collection contains a lot of different
denominations, gold, silver and bronze coins.
