Vilas-Mages Co. was a large framing house located in Chicago (09/03/2005)
Hi, I have found that Vilas-Mages Co. was a
large framing house located in Chicago. I am not sure when or if they closed
operation, but you may want to check with
Winternitz is an industrial auctioneer that list's Vilas-Mages Co. as a
client within the Chicago "woodworking" industry. This leads me to believe
that Vilas-Mages was only the company that framed the works people possess,
and did not actually produce the artwork housed within their frames. I
cannot find any information that they produced or sold artwork or prints of
any kind. I own two Japanese woodblock prints that are housed in frames with
the Vilas-Mage sticker that is hand numbered (order number, same on both
prints), but both also have a foil sticker from a Muskegon Michigan art &
framing gallery which closed in the 1940's. It seems that small town art
dealers sent prints & drawings to Vilas-Mages for special order framing.

I just had a print re-framed. when I took the backing paper off the frame at the framers, i noticed a label on the back of the porint reading:Vilas Mages Co. Chicago. "Golde Haze" #2709-2327. It is a copy of a print signed by G. Marogic or G. Maragic and shows a woman in Dutch garb in a field with a windmill in the near distance. It catches the sunlight in an interesting way in our kitchen where we get the sunnset on our southern wall. The framer said it was probably one of a series of copies by a company that made them for what he called "furniture store art." C. Woodward

It is signed by someone, but I cannot make out the name, it seems to be CARROL, CARREL, with an inital in front of it The second picture does have the paper marking on the back and states VILAS MAGES CO. CHICAGO. IT IS NUMBERED 3211-1 and titled 'THE CHESS GAME' Any information you could give me about these prints would be greatly appreciated.thanks

Is it possible that I have it? Thanks for your help.Bill

My deceased Aunt passed down a painting
titled "The Music Room", which is of a beautiful blond woman playing a
harpsichord. There is a harp behind the harpsichord as well as a wall tapestry.
The painting is 34 1/2" wide and 30" high with original frame. On the back of
the frame at the top is a sticker with Vilas Mages Co., 2914-15 and the name of
the piece, "The Music Room". In the upper left hand of the painting is
MARGUERITE S PEARSON. I'm sure this is not an original oil as the composition is
flat but made to look like oil. It is not on canvas but on some type of board.
Can you help with some information? Is it worth keeping ? It has to be at least 40 years old, i would guess. Thank you for your help.

My name is Glenda Crume and I live in
Beaverton Oregon. I'm 53 years of age. I have two pictures I always admired when
a little girl that my grandmother had on her walls. When my grandmother was
dying I inherited the two pictures. The pictures are aproximately 6"x4" in size
framed in their original framework in an approximate 10"x8", light in color wood
frame with a 1 1/2" matting around the pictures. The inner part of the matting
has a gold painted line to accent the pictures. The two pictures have a small
vace filled with flowers (both different). There is also a signature on one that
I think reads H. or Stultz or H. Steelz. It is hard to determine. The backing on
the pictures were sealed in a very fine paper that was most likely glued onto
the wood frame. The fine paper is severly torn on the back but sides are still
connected to the wood frame. What generated my reason to contact you is also on
the back of the frame is a sticker with Vilas-Mages Co. Chicao on it with an
identity number on it: One is 2679-N-2061 and on the other picutre it reads
My question is are these very deligate pictures of any value? And if so, where could I go in Portland Oregon who could appraise them for me?
I appreciate your assistance. Glenda Crume

Good Morning: In searching the internet
for some information about some art work, we found your email address. I am
hoping you might be able to help me.
I have been given a piece of art work that had been owned by my grandparents. They were both born in the 1890's and lived in the Milwaukee, WI area all their lives. We do not know when or where they purchased this piece. It is "Christ in Gethsemne" (This is the exact spelling on the back of the framing.) "2709-A-2617" "Vilas-mages Chicago" is also noted on the back of the framing. I have not removed the art work from the frame as it is in excellent shape and I did not want to destroy any part of it.
I am just looking for any information you might have about this: artist, age of the work, possible value,.... I appreciate any thing you might be able to share with me. Sincerely, Carol M. Eaton
