New auction World Record at Feldman for an Indian stamp (06/01/2011)

On first day of the Spring Auction Series in Geneva, a 1948 10 Rupee Mahatma Gandhi stamp of India has been sold for a World Record price of EUR 144,000 (US$ 205,000); this is the highest price ever paid for a single Indian stamp (smashing the previous 2010 record set by the 4 Annas “Inverted Head” error). Additionally it is also believed that this sale possibly represents a World Record price paid for a modern stamp from any country.

Hong Kong Inaugural Sale 2011 - Results (06/01/2011)

The inaugural sale of David Feldman’s Asia office in Hong Kong held on May 14 to 15 was a real success. Highlights included the 2 full sheets of the 1980 Chinese New Year Monkey that were sold for HK$ 1'130'000 and HK$ 1'120'000, with dealers being particularly attracted to modern issues from Communist China. When one considers that in February, the Hong Kong office was not furnished and that the current team was not yet in place, these results are a real testament to the business skills and tenacity of HK CEO Sam Chiu and the dedication and hard work of his supporting team

DAVID FELDMAN GENEVA Announces - Results of Auctions (05/25/2010)

"Most valuable stamp" stays world's most expensive object

The famous Treskilling Yellow of Sweden, which became the world's most valuable stamp in 1996 when it sold for 2'875'000 Swiss Francs at a David Feldman public auction, has just changed hands once again, maintaining its reputation also as the world's most valuable object by weight.

At a private auction held in Geneva today, the famous stamp whose history alone is the subject of several publications, was acquired by an international consortium for an undisclosed figure. The company had requests from four parties to bid; in the end two of them took active part, and the consortium was the winner.

"The consortium members have purchased the stamp believing it to be a solid investment in these turbulent times," says Mr. David Feldman, "The consortium wishes to keep the price confidential. However, I have little doubt that in time both the price and identity of the consortium will become public knowledge."

Unique Tuscany Error sells for undisclosed price

The famous Tuscany error with the value tablet inverted is listed by the specialised and most widely used Sassone catalogue of Italy with a retail price of one million Euros - the most highly priced stamp of all the Italian States.

Estimated by the David Feldman company of Geneva for its private auction today at between 400'000 and 600'000 Euros, it was sold for an undisclosed figure, but confirmed by Mr. Feldman to be within the range of the estimate.

It has been recognised as one of the world's rarest stamps, having been featured as one of the famous "Aristocrats of Philately" at exhibition in New York some years ago. No doubt the deluxe handbook-catalogue just produced by David Feldman and today's auction result will contribute to its future fame and fortune. What can David Feldman do together with you. Buying or selling, we have been a reliable partner to generations of collectors, for over 40 years. Contact us today - our Autumn auctions will be closing soon.

LATEST AUCTION RESULTS FROM DAVID FELDMAN SA (12/06/2009)

Our Autumn auction series, held November 24-28, showed that "fresh to the market" material, even from areas often considered "unpopular," will bring strong interest and high prices. For example, an accumulation of Ottoman Empire postal history, built over 40 years on a small budget, was presented as individual and group lots throughout the catalogues and brought many times the overall expected result, with fierce competition for covers that had been "off the market" for decades.

A special offer of Great Britain Modern Errors, the "Plaza" collection, presented in over 150 individual lots, was particularly successful, as lot after lot attracted bidders on the internet and present in the auction room, with nearly all lots sold at high percentages of the estimates (and of the current catalogue values).

Part 1 of the Loaring Olympics collection of both philatelic objects and memorabilia (torches, programs, medals, etc.) brought bids from collectors and institutions world-wide. Finland's "Grand Duchy" period, an F.I.P. Large Gold Medal collection offered in 450 lots, found strong home-country demand from the Helsinki dual auction room competing with international collectors of choice classics. The second part of the Italian States "LUXUS" collection showed astounding prices, well above the norm, for exceptional stamps, covers and usages, some soaring to well above the estimates. Sections of Europe & Colonies, Great Britain & Commonwealth, plus Overseas lots all confirmed the pattern: "fresh to the market" brings solid results. For example, a small section of older China individual lots, for example, reached results often well in excess of current Scott catalogue values, while a specialised accumulation of Panama covers, presented in appropriate groups, beat the high estimates.

Collections, Lots & Estates (over 900 lots of them) saw a room full of bidders compete against agents and the internet. "No bargains here today," commented one bidder, who had obviously hoped to pay less for his winter pleasures... and here again the fresh material, especially from unusual areas, set the pace. Other collections, part of the semi-annual auction of Rarities of the World, were equally impressive in their results.
A collection of Antarctic mail, estimated for 15'000 Euros, brought nearly 32'000 including buyer's fees. Another, of the Palestine E.E.F. stamps used from Lebanon, brought over 16'500 Euros against an estimate of 4'000 to 6'000, and a specialised collection of Syria Arab Government issues, estimated at 40'000 Euros, opened at 46'000 and was finally knocked down at over 140'000 after dramatic bidding.

"Live" bidding via the internet (as is the case now all over the world) has become a very important source of bids. With every auction, the team at David Feldman SA reports that more and more substantial lots are selling to internet bidders (using the technology pioneered by the company over a decade ago). These bidders may often pleasantly surprise the auction company, as there is no indication of their presence until nearly the moment of their bids, but it enables remote buyers to first "look" at detailed scans of larger lots, then to chase lots that might otherwise slip away for an increment or two, and to know their total "wins" within seconds of bidding.

"Prices Realised" lists for every catalogue have been posted to the company's web site, http://www.davidfeldman.com/l/1/m/2/p/91 , together with the auction catalogues, and these lists enable one to buy or make offers on the relatively small percentage of unsold lots, and to print out a list of results by catalogue of interest.

Mistake on Hawaii's New Stamp (07/23/2009)

The artist who created Hawaii's new statehood stamp is not happy with the finished result. Herb Kane says the postal service used the wrong typography on the word "Hawai‘i." Instead of using an ‘okina, they made the common mistake of using an apostrophe, where the top of the line is thicker than the bottom. It's subtle but meaningful.

DAVID FELDMAN OPENS IN USA INITIAL AUCTIONS PLANNED FOR SEPTEMBER (06/08/2009)

New York, NY and Geneva Switzerland

David Feldman SA, one of the world’s leading philatelic auction houses, and holder of world records such as the highest price ever achieved for a philatelic item and the highest price ever for a single stamp, will open offices in New York City under the name David Feldman USA.

The auction house, established by David Feldman over forty years ago and residing in Geneva since 1973, has sold more Grand Prix and Gold Medal exhibit collections than any company in the history of philately. In addition, according to Linn’s Stamp News June 1, 2009 issue (p.3), Feldman owns 13 (over half) of the top 25 all-time top auction realizations for philatelic items.

Also, in 2000, the Feldman firm pioneered the use of live interactive bidding over the internet live during a public auction to allow clients around the world to share in the experience of being in an auction room as lots are sold.

Today, David Feldman SA is pleased to announce that it is now establishing a new base in New York called David Feldman USA.
It will focus on its trademark areas - Great World Rarities, Exhibition Collections, and initiate monthly sales of Collections & Lots. The company will also offer the advantages of a one-owner sale to collectors with collections with a minimum value of $100,000.

Collectors and professional philatelists can expect the Feldman firm’s unwavering commitment to obtaining the maximum possible results through its renowned friendly and flexible customer service, intelligent promotion and presentation, backed by reliable financial strength.

Experienced American professional philatelist and auctioneer Andrew Kupersmit will lead David Feldman USA. Kupersmit’s career began in 1995. For the last two years, he has owned his own business and in July 2007 he became co-owner of Purser and Associates. During this period, he assisted the family of the late National Postal Museum Curator W. Wilson Hulme, and the estate of renowned philatelist George W. Brett in the sale of their philatelic property. He also consulted with non-traditional philatelic auctioneer Philip R. Weiss, where his philatelic expertise and market knowledge contributed to the five world records set for important US stamps at the sale of the fabulous Newport Collection. Also, Kupersmit serves on the executive committee for World Stamp Show 2016, on the boards of NOJEX and the NJ Postal History Society.

Kupersmit said, “It was very clear from the beginning that the Feldman firm and I shared the same ethics, philosophy and ambitions about how to build and operate a successful auction house. I was honored that he asked me, and I am pleased to be part of this exciting venture.”

Feldman said, “I have always admired Andy and been duly impressed by his performance and philatelic acumen. I am very much looking forward to working together with him”.

David Feldman SA Announces Auction of the "LUXUS" Collection of Italian States (11/24/2008)

"When only the Best of the Best is Sufficient"

For those for whom only the most stringent standards of quality, centring and condition apply, for those who have wondered where many of the finest stamps and covers of the Italian States have been, for those who wish to set a new high standard in collecting, David Feldman SA is proud to present the "LUXUS" collection of the Italian States.

Every lot has been graded at least "very fine" but nearly all lots have merited a grade of "Superb" - or higher! Whereas the USA market is nearly completely dominated by the pursuit of condition, with superb stamps bringing astronomic multiples of nominal catalogue values, nothing like it has yet been seen for European material, where stamps of the highest quality usually bring arithmetic rather than geometric premiums for condition.

Therefore, though we anticipate that many of the lots will bring well in excess of catalogue value, we also suggest that these prices, in hindsight after a few years, will seem inexpensive as the rest of the world comes to appreciate the absolute rarity of the finest possible condition, and will begin to pay the premium required to obtain it.

The "LUXUS" collection was formed over several decades, with purchases from public auctions and select private dealers, and consists of the finest available condition. Single stamps often show parts of their neighbors, or are "miniature blocks of nine." Covers are exceptionally attractive, with well-margined multicolur frankings, exquisite cancels, fresh colours and important usages.

Rarity as well as condition is also a factor: the unique "4 Crazie" of Tuscany with inverted value tablet (comparable to the One Cent British Guiana or the Sweden 3 Skilling Yellow error) is among the "LUXUS" lots - as are many other great rarities of the Italian States, e.g. the 3 Lire of Tuscany, all in the finest available condition.

David Feldman SA will present the "LUXUS" collection over the next several years. For catalogues, please write to us or request them from our web site, www.davidfeldman.com  as they become available.

The next David Feldman SA auctions will take place April 28 - May 2, 2009 and consignments will be accepted until mid-January.

David Feldman sells Mauritius Ball Envelope to Singapore philatelist (10/23/2008)

At a special reception and dinner party held recently by the Geneva based David Feldman Company, they announced that the famous Mauritius Post Office Ball Envelope was sold to Vikram Chand, the well known Singapore philatelist.

Mr. Chand, always admired the envelope ever since he began collecting Mauritius postal history. Born in Osaka, Japan Mr. Chand always found it quite ironic that his collecting interests should have brought him to purchase this world famous item which was part of the famous Mauritius collection of Hiroyuki Kanai, almost a next door neighbour !

The Ball Envelope is franked by the famous Post Office One Penny stamp issued in Mauritius in 1847 just at the time the Governor's wife, lady Gomm, was preparing invitations to a Fancy Dress Ball.

The stamps were first used to pay the postage for sending out the invitations. Only three such envelopes survive today: one is held in the British Library Museum, another is owned by Queen Elizabeth II and is a treasure of the Royal Collection and this is the third.

"I am delighted that this marvellous world rarity, is passing into the hands of such a passionate collector. The sale is also a tribute to the confidence and belief in the market of rare stamps", says David Feldman.

The envelope, which is insured for US$4 millions, will be soon displayed on behalf of Mr. Chand in the British Library Museum.

David Feldman October 2-7, 2008 Auctions: Strong Levels and Spirited Competition (10/15/2008)

There is an old adage, "Thrones may crumble and nations may perish, but the postage stamp endures forever." The results of the week-long series of auctions held in Geneva, Switzerland by David Feldman SA proved the point. Just one typical example: the Austria First Issue 9 kreuzer "missing 9" printing variety, estimated at 2'000 Euros, realised 23,900 (all prices given include buyer's fees and commission).

Strong levels for nice classics prevailed in the classic Spain and Great Britain Line-Engraved. Stamps and covers of Sweden, particularly scarce town cancels, often brought multiples of the estimates to some of the 70 bidders gathered in a simultaneous bidding room in Stockholm. The first day cover of the 1855 4 skilling value, one of two known, estimated at 80'000 Euros, soared to 262'900 and set the tenor for other Skilling issue covers throughout the auction.

From Afghanistan to Zanzibar, from Polar to Olympics, from elusive varieties and postal history to enormous collections and large lots, this David Feldman auction series presented a true cross-section of world philately - as well of course, as the semi-annual auction of "Rarities of the World."

“Rarities of the World:” over 50 persons present in the auction room, including leading dealers and collectors from Italy, England, France and Switzerland, plus additional internet and telephone bidders (at times, five different telephones were in use) and agents competed for 88 lots. Two of the highlights:
From the extensive China section, the famous "Countess Caroline" cover, with its attractive franking consisting of a block of nine of the 5 Candarins "Large Dragon" issue, opened at 750'000 Euros and proceeded majestically to a final price of 1'165'125 - a new world record for any Asia cover, and 24 years after David Feldman first set a world record for this same world philatelic gem.

Among the "crown jewels" of Russian philately, the unique cover considered the greatest item of Imperial Russian philately, franked by a single 10 kopeck imperforate of 1857 and a strip of three of the second issue 30 kopecks of 1858, addressed to the Austrian Embassy at St. Petersburg, came up for bidding. Opening at 750'000 Euros, it was fought over by two telephone bidders and one room bidder, and brought a gasp when the price reached 1 million Euros - soon to be eclipsed by its final realisation of 1'314'500 - a new world record for Russia, and among the highest prices ever paid for a philatelic item at public auction.

This series of auctions showed the growing importance of internet bidders, as over 140 different bidders competed for over half of the lots in the auctions, and were successful on 20% of those, for a total of nearly 700'000 Euros. In addition, the unique direct internet bidding system operated by the company made possible the remote auction room in Stockholm. That accounted for the lion's share of the successful bids for the Sweden section, bringing the total internet sales alone to over one million Euros.

We invite you to check the prices realised lists posted on our web site, www.davidfeldman.com  together with the auction catalogues for all results.

David Feldman Spring Auctions, April 1-5, 2008, Feature Great Results for Rarities (04/10/2008)

Reflecting the continuing strong market for rare stamps and postal history, and with dealers and exhibitors looking towards the major international exhibitions coming up, culminating with London 2010, our latest series of auctions, held April 1-5, 2008, totalled nearly 10 million Euro, averaging 30% over the estimates and with a very high percentage of lots sold.

The semi-annual auction of Rarities of the World & Important Collections included four great world rarities. The first on offer was the British Guiana 1851 "Cotton Reel" issue "2 cents" error on pale blue paper, on a cover formerly in the Burrus Collection. It opened at 360'000 Euro and sold for 597'500 Euro to a telephone bidder. Soon after, the only known unused example of the Baden 9 kreuzer error of colour on blue-green paper, with nearly full original gum, brought 1'314'500 Euro, far eclipsing its previous results in 1991 and 1997 auctions.

The next lot was the newly-discovered cover with the largest known franking of the 1850 1 schilling first issue of Schleswig-Holstein (two strips of three), used from Ploen; it sold for 478'000 Euro in its maiden appearance at public auction, while the famous "Trondheim" block of 39 of Norway's first issue brought 1'434'000 Euro. When people inquired about the identity of the buyers for some of these items, Feldman philatelist Anders Thorell said, "There is a confidentiality issue inherent in our business, however we can state that the buyer represents a foreign company presently acquiring great world philatelic rarities."

Other lots among the Rarities included an important Canada collection offered in several lots, starting with a mint 1851 12d Black with sheet margin that realised 155'350 Euro, while the rest brought an aggregate of 133'840 Euro against upper estimates totalling 51'000 Euro. A collection of United States formed in Europe, estimated for a minimum of about 75'000 Euro spread over 12 lots, was sold for 168'973 Euro to several different buyers who competed intensely for every lot. Also on offer were a Romania 1862 6 parale single franking on newspaper wrapper, estimated for 6'000 to 9'000 Euro, which soared from an opening bid of 8'000 to a final result of 31'000 Euro in a long struggle among several bidders.

Our offer of the second part of the "Kristall" Estate of Sweden saw the famous cover franked by a block and a single of the 1855 4 skilling value open for 95'000 Euro and conclude at 227'000 Euro - typical of the strong realisations throughout the auction. For example, an imperforate set of blocks of the 1874 Officials, estimated at 10'000 Euro, brought 26'290 Euro.

Among the Europe and Colonies lots on offer, a section of France drew much interest and excellent results for covers with uncommon frankings or to unusual destinations, with results often reaching multiples of estimates. Overseas lots included strong coverage of a large Egypt section, while Persia rarities and inverted centres brought excellent results.

British area lots, and particularly Great Britain proper, were offered in profusion. A session which included several hundred "Penny Blacks" in high quality drew intense bidding from the room as well as from those bidding via the internet, with lot after lot soaring to levels well above estimate. For example, a block of four of the 1d "Rainbow Trials," estimated at 5'000 Euro, brought 14'340 Euro - and this result was typical of the realisations throughout the session, with some "Penny Blacks" bringing 360 to 420 Euro each, and one from plate 11, matched with a "Penny Red" from the same plate and position, bringing 3’107 Euro.

Collections, lots and estates, offered in a separate group of sessions as well as being included in the Sweden and Rarities auctions, again proved that no matter the area, the degree of specialisation or the mixture of contents, there is very strong demand when aspirations for both quality and rarity are met.

Bidders watching and participating via the internet were more important than ever, and many had taken advantage of the extensive scans of large lots the company had posted allowing collectors to view every item in a large lot in full size and colour. Managing Director Marcus Orsi estimated that the internet added at least 35% to the total realisation, and stated, "This has been one of our most successful auction series, and demonstrates our ability to generate strong results for every area of philately and for every kind of lot, from a modest accumulation to a world-class rarity. Our company continues its tradition of leadership in the auction business for world-wide stamps, covers, and collections, and our results prove it, time after time."

The catalogues and prices realised can be seen on the our web site, www.davidfeldman.com. The next scheduled David Feldman auction will be held October 2-6, 2008 and will close by the middle of July. David Feldman SA is known for its tradition of innovation, friendly and knowledgeable staff and flexible arrangements with vendors - all of which contribute to strong results in the auctions held twice a year. David Feldman Announces Innovative Merger Serving the Highest Levels of Philately (01/18/2008)

David Feldman has merged his Geneva, Switzerland-based auction house with Dr. Markus A. Frey’s rare stamp trading company, based in Zurich. Together, they form the Feldman & Frey Philatelic Group, which will develop the ability to buy, sell and hold the world’s rarest stamps while continuing the auctions which have set world records in every sector of philately for almost 30 years.

"Unlike many other high-value collectibles, particularly paintings and objets d'art, stamps have lagged behind as real assets, and it certainly is the perfect time to remedy this," Feldman says. "Our plans are to develop private transactions as distinct from our auction operations, bringing the elite financial expertise of the Frey Group into the high priced sector of philately, and establishing sound and secure values for the rarest philatelic items."

"Since the passing of such monumental dealers as Renato Mondolfo and the Weill Brothers," says Feldman, "there has been an unfortunate lack of professional support for the trade of great stamp rarities. Serious collectors may wait generations for coveted items to come onto the market, or for a buyer at an appropriate level to appear. This is too long; today, things must move at a more convenient pace. The Feldman & Frey Philatelic Group will provide firm market support for the purchase and placement of great philatelic rarities, anywhere and at any time, and create a venue where the top stamp collectors will be tempted by exciting offers."

David Feldman is an international philatelist, renowned auctioneer, author and recipient of awards including the International Grand Prix Club Gold Award. He is a signatory of the Roll of Distinguished Philatelists (Ireland). Over the past 40 years, David Feldman and his company have become the global leader in handling the most valuable stamp rarities in the world, and have sold more Grand Prix and Large Gold Medal collections than any other company in the history of philately.Using a remarkably comprehensive and reliable Live Internet Bidding System, perfected since its first application in May 2000, has enabled the Company to extend the global reach of its auctions to every corner of the world. Dr. Markus A. Frey, a dedicated philanthropist, chairs Bank Frey & Co. AG in Zurich, an elite private bank serving an international clientele, typically with high-value assets. Among other business activities, he is a leading partner in the well known Zurich law firm of Niederer Kraft & Frey.

By combining the expertise and world-wide contacts of David Feldman SA with the international legal and trust services of the Frey Group, the Feldman & Frey Philatelic Group will further develop, from a position of immense financial strength, the highest value and top quality sector of the philatelic market. The Group will offer its services not only to top philatelists but also to those who would consider rare philatelic items as an intelligent long-term component of their overall asset allocation.

Results of our Switzerland Auction in Zurich: David Feldman Auction in Zurich, Dec. 4, 2007 - Great Success for Classic Switzerland (12/18/2007)

The David Feldman auction of the "Atlantic" collection of Classic Switzerland, presented over 270 lots in a deluxe, bi-lingual (German/English) catalogue. Of these, 97% were sold, for a total of 168% of the printed estimates.

Bidders from throughout Switzerland as well as from several foreign countries were present both in the auction room or via the internet, with most lots starting at modest levels and then soaring higher, sometimes to amazing levels.

The Cantonal Issues which made up a the main part of the catalogue saw many outstanding realisations. For example, the Zurich 6rp mint strip of ten, ex Hind, estimated for CHF 10'000, sold for CHF 31'070 (all results include buyer's premium). The right and left halves of a "Double Geneva" used on a matched pair of covers, estimated at CHF 20'000, brought CHF 47'800, while a pair of the Geneva "Large Eagles" on cover soared to CHF 64'530 against an estimate of CHF 15'000.

From the Winterthur issue, a strip of three of the 2 1/2rp used on cover, estimated at CHF 60'000, realised CHF 83'650. A mixed franking of the Winterthur with a 2 1/2rp Orts-Post, brought CHF 155'350 and another mixed franking, with the Rayon I 5r value, climbed to an astonishing CHF 191'200.

We at David Feldman are already making plans for our 2008 auction of Switzerland. We are also finalising preparations for our Spring series of auctions, planned for April 1-5, 2008, with rare stamps, covers and collections from all over the world, plus our semi-annual auction of Rarities of the World, which will again feature great single rarities and important collections offered intact.

The catalogue for the December 4, 2007 Switzerland auction as well as complete prices realised can be accessed on our web site, www.davidfeldman.com

David Feldman April 15-21, 2007 Auction: Outstanding Results (04/27/2007)

An unprecedented surge in demand pushed activity and prices to unprecedented levels, with intense bidding from all over the world. The frenetic pace culminated in an exceptional total result for the week of auctions that began April 15 and ended April 21. Six different catalogues presented nearly 5'000 total lots, a panoply of material that encompassed the world of philately. Strong bids from multitudes of bidders resulted in a memorable week of auctions, with prices pushed for lot after lot to new peaks.

Several room bidders noted that the internet has finally become an increasingly important factor, with internet bidders holding their own against telephone bidders, agents and others physically present in the auction room. According to a representative of Core Technologies, who provide the software for internet bidding, at least 425 different bidders were connected during some portion of the auctions, bid on over 36% of the lots (often with multiple internet bidders on the same lot), and won about 23% of the total lots.

A session of over 500 lots of Great Britain saw prices surpass recent London levels for choice material, with rare proofs and multiples leading the way. A strip of six of the Penny Black tied to piece soared to € 38'240 (about £26'000) and a used block of six on piece fetched € 43'020 (about £29'250) while an Ormond Hill die proof in ultramarine overprinted "Specimen" sold for € 31'070 (about £21'125, well over its present catalogue value) to an internet bidder after intense competition. Among more modern issues, the popular Seahorse £1, in a mint corner margin example, brought € 5,258 (about £ 3'575) - typical of the results for key stamps throughout the session. Another session of British Commonwealth saw prices nearing or surpassing catalogue values for choice material, and strong activity for high-quality sections of Canada & BNA, Cape of Good Hope and other areas.

The dispersal of the unique archive of the Courvoisier company of Switzerland, who had printed stamps for over 80 countries world-wide, was intensely contested by a room full of bidders including auction agents, telephone bidders and dozens internet bidders. Lot after lot soared to two, three, four or even higher multiples of the estimates as collectors of thematics vied against country specialtists and dealers. The highlight of the sale was a lot of 59 imperforate proofs and essays of the 1948 Gandhi issue of India, which opened at € 22'000 and was the subject of bidding by no less than 6 telephone bidders, several internet bidders and several agents. Step by step, the price climbed relentlessly, and the lot was hammered down for € 89'625 (about $121'890) to sustained applause. Similar levels prevailed for items from popular areas; for example a collection of Papua New Guinea issues of 1962-82, estimated at € 4'000 - 8'000, ended in a battle between telephone and internet bidders at € 33'460 (about $45'500) and a collection of Vatican City, estimated at € 10'000 - 20'000, went to a telephone bidder against agent and other floor bids for € 57,360 (about $78'000).

Among the Overseas lots, a strong section of United States material drew many bids from there via the internet as well as from agents and collectors present in the auction room. The 1869 15c type II and 24c inverted centers, used, together brought € 30'475 (about $41'500) and an attractive block of four of the 1915 50c Franklin (Scott no. 440) opened well over its estimate and was finally hammered down for € 9'560 (about $13'000) against a Scott catalogue value of $5'200. A section of thematics, featuring Olympics and Polar material, went well, with unusual material (programmes, tickets, signed memorabilia) leading the way.

The company's semi-annual auction of Rarities of the World included an exhibit-mounted collection of Argentina which brought € 149'375 (about $203'000); the famous Cape of Good Hope 4d Black triangular climbed to € 35'850 (about £24'400) in a duel between auction agents, and the unique 1870 French "boule de moulins" cover to Paris forwarded to Russia was picked up by a telephone bidder for € 69'310 - just a few of many great realisations throughout that sale.

The final sessions of the week were Collections, Large Lots & Estates. Collectors and dealers from every continent had come to view; some had spent a week or more. Lot after lot was hammered down at multiples of its printed estimates; lot after lot was the subject of intense rivalry both in the room and over the internet. The highlight of the day's sessions came near the end, when an investment holding of Peoples Republic of China came under the hammer. Opening at € 120'000 (the high estimate), it soon soared past € 200'000 and then € 300'000 until only two bidders remained - and the hammer finally dropped at € 406'300 (about $552'500, exceeding Scott catalogue value of about $520'000).

Bidders and staff agreed that it had been an extraordinary week, one of the strongest auctions anyone could remember anywhere. The next David Feldman auctions are scheduled for early October 2007, and potential vendors are requested to contact the staff as soon as possible, as catalogues will be closing in mid-July at the latest. Specialised sections of Sweden and of classic Brazil are already on hand, and the company hopes to bring its unrivaled mix of expertise and promotion to bear on every property consigned for October.

DAVID FELDMAN December 3, 2006 Geneva Auction Results: New Record Price Levels for Romania, Rarities and Egypt (12/08/2006)

DAVID FELDMAN December 3, 2006 Geneva Auction Results: New Record Price Levels for Romania, Rarities and Egypt

The "Tomasini" Romania, a Grand Prix collection not seen for over twenty years, and featuring important rarities some of which had not been on the market in over 40 years, captured the imagination and fervor of buyers from across Europe and around the world, often surprising those present at the auction. The first lot set the tenor of the entire auction: The first stamp of Romania, the 27 parale of the famous "Bulls," in mint condition and unquestionably the finest known example, had been estimated at Euro 50'000 to 70'000 and soared to Euro 154'000 (all results herein include buyer's commission) in a protracted battle among several bidders. This contrasts with a Scott catalogue value of just $19,000!

Lot after lot, nearly every estimate was matched or exceeded, especially for the rarest items. Among other "Bulls," the superb mint 54 parale brought Euro 54'500 (catalogue value $4'250), the mint 81 parale went for Euro 142,200 (catalogue value $21'000) and the 108 parale reached Euro 42,660 (catalogue $14'000). Similar levels prevailed for the used and the covers; for example, a 108 parale on cover from Piatra, estimated for Euro 40'000 to 60'000, opened at Euro 60'000 and finally stopped at Euro 142,200.

The famous "Large Journal" franked by 8 of the 32 known examples of the Second Issue 5 parale on bluish paper, which had previously graced the Schwartz and Burrus collections, had been estimated at Euro 500'000 to 750'000. If it sold, it would be the world record price for any Central or Eastern European item. Anticipation was high as it opened at Euro 500'000 and went up slowly, step by step, to a final result of Euro 829'500 - or well over US $1 million, ranking it within the club of the "World's Greatest Rarities."

The rest of the Romania auction continued with similar results throughout. David Feldman, chairman of the auction company, stated, "Our efforts to produce an intelligent and beautiful catalogue worthy of the connoisseurship evident throughout this collection have certainly been rewarded. The new price levels for the previously under-valued classics of Romania are an example of how proper promotion coupled with extraordinary material will bring exceptional results. Innovation, expertise and world-wide presence set to task with excellent material is an ideal formula - one which has rewarded us with world records time and again."
The company's semi-annual auction of "Rarities of the World" included a large section of classic Mauritius, another of "Via Panama" postal history, as well as stamps, covers and collections from Afghanistan to USA. A cancelled block of four of the Cape of Good Hope 1d "Woodblock," ex Dale-Lichtenstein, brought Euro 40'300 (low estimate Euro 20'000) while two first issue covers from Reunion brought Euro 52'000 and 57'000 respectively. Among the Panama lots, an 1860 cover from the Danish West Indies to Hawaii via Panama, and franked with the 3c Arms stamp, opened at Euro 7'000 and brought Euro 23'700. A specialised collection of the Brooke family issues of Sarawak, 1869-1909, estimated at Euro 200'000, sold for Euro 284,400 as one lot. A large multiple of the first printing of the Switzerland "Basle Dove" was estimated at Euro 120'000 and sold for Euro 171'825.

Mauritius classics continued the trend set in David Feldman's June auction, with prices for attractive stamps often exceeding catalogue values. For example, the 2d "Sherwin" (SG no. 40), with a catalogue value of $10'000 and estimated at Euro 5'000, sold after intense bidding for Euro 17'750, and an unused 1d Dardenne litho (SG no. 41a) opened at Euro 9'000 and sold for Euro 21'330.

The final section of the auctions, comprising the second portion of the famous "Nile" collection of Egypt postal history, also saw strong realisations for the top items, especially for mixed frankings and for Egypt used abroad. The combination cover franked by the 10 piastre first issue together with stamps of Italy, posted through the Italian P.O. at Alexandria, opened at Euro 30'000 and sold for Euro 65'175, while two covers with Egypt second issue 1pi values used from Greece, and showing Greek 20 lepta values added as postage dues, brought Euro 3'800 and 4'000 respectively.

In fewer than 500 lots, the auction series with three deluxe catalogues achieved outstanding results. A complete list of prices realised is posted on the company's web site. The large comprehensive David Feldman Spring auction is planned for the end of March 2007, and consignments are invited until the middle of January.
