Introduction about Gold Coins

Gold coins are flat, mainly round pieces of gold that have been issued by government organizations. King Croesus, ruler of Lydia between 560-546 BC, began issuing the first gold coins for general circulation. Since this time gold coins had a very long period as a primary form of money.
Today many countries continue to make legal tender gold coins. These are primarily meant for collectors and investment purposes and are not used for money circulation.
While collector gold coins are primarily collected for their numismatic value, gold bullion coins today derive their value from the gold content. They are viewed by  investors as a "hedge" against inflation and falling stocks and other crises like market turmoils. So collectors and investors appreciate  them as a safe store of value.

Gold Collector Coins

Many factors determine the value of a gold coin, such as its gold value, rarity, condition, the number originally minted and most important factor are supply and demand.
Collector gold coins are primarily collected for their numismatic value. Sometimes if the gold price gets very high the gold value of some coins may be higher than the numismatic value if the rarity and condition of this collector coin is rather low.

In early 1933, more than 445,000 Double Eagle coins had been struck by the U.S. Mint, but most of these were surrendered and melted down. Only a few coins managed to survive.

Many countries have one design. Normally this design like the Krugerrand and the British Britannia  remains constant each year. Others have variations each year.
